The Karle SEZ facade project based in Bangalore, India is a series of environmentally responsive facade systems intended for an office development master planned by Woods Bagot. As a process solar radiation analysis is paired with parametric geometric development to produce systems that mitigate the solar heating loads on the buildings. This process is deployed into three organizations, spherical, vertical, and horizontal. Slated for construction within 9 months the facade systems are extremely elemental. Throughout all three systems there are a maximum of 4 different panel types to maintain a high level of feasability in respect to the building's delivery schedule, while simultaneously creating a high performance building envelope. Ultimately the horizontal facade system was chosen and is under further development for construction.

GEM is a proposed hotel and retail development currently in progress in the center of Mumbai, India. The site context offers a rich history being the former site of a large cotton mill within the city, as well as one of the few preserved natural water bodies within the urban context. With the goal of becoming a premiere commercial and luxury destination within Mumbai as well as a rare public space within the city, much of the site's history influenced the projects concept.

Taken from the site's history the performance of the loom brought forth an overarching idea of woven volumes, surfaces, and threads. Organized around two primary distribution zones being the commercial and hospitality central spaces, volumes wrap and weave in and out of one another. Anchoring the northern and southern boundaries of the site are the natural water body, which becomes a celebrated public performance space; and the lifestyle department store, which performs like a knot integrating retail volumes and pronouncing the commercial entry.

The 30.000 sq. ft hotel tower is treated as two bars that subtly shift in section whose form creates an overlapping relationship with the podium that flows below. A strategy of analyzing solar radiation performance in conjunction with developing building information modeling systems was taken to develop an facade strategy that responded to solar heat gain and visibility. The WWR, window wall ratios, of each facade bay shifts with respect to analysis data while further tying the formal language of the hotel tower with the horizontal weaving/banding of the podium.

Following the disastrous earthquake in Haiti in 2010 several aid agencies and AEC professionals responded with great urgency to the successive crisis which afflicted the country. The Clinton Foundation and UNICEF along with several other leading philanthropic organizations teamed up with North American based modular housing manufacturer Clayton Homes to produce a mass housing community for a town north of the capital, Port of Prince. While the development was meant for immediate deployment it was not meant to function as temporary or simply disaster relief shelters. The homes/community in concept were meant to be an expandable system. With thousands of Haitian citizens displaced the primary concern was to restore basic living conditions.

Clayton homes established a partnership with New York based RLA, led by Haitian architect Rodney Leon, to develop a prefabricated housing system that had to meet the most basic conditions of living as a base, and meet stringent budget and transportation requirements. At RLA we've produced a series of 300, 400, and 500sf living units that house 1 living area, bath, kitchen, and 1-3 bedrooms. A unique perspective on Haiti's culture and climate allowed us to value engineer the project in a such a way that functions such as dinning become an extension to the exterior of the home.Capitalizing on the opportunities of the briefs constraints the home is a Steel frame wood and batten structure. While implementing sustainable strategies and taking cues from the architectural history of Haiti, no glazing is employed in the home. Wrought Iron grill work maintain conditions of safety while allowing for the passive colling of spaces, and simultaneously allowing for an interpretation of the existing architectural language through form as well as color.

<description>A growing collection of lifestyle and portrait photographs.

The photographs in this set don’t particularly belong to any collection per se. They represent moments when I’ve been inspired by the events of everyday life, and was fortunate enough to capture it.

The interactive sketch was the basis for the more elemental Spore Tank sketch also presented on the site. An early creative desire was to create an atmospheric abyss where these abstract creatures flow and oscillate around some source. I spent some time developing a class for the creatures, which have tentacle like elements made from scaling x forms. Although there were significant limitations to the number of creatures I could produce due to processing power. For this reason the subsequent iteration of the project would be much more elemental. Click within the window to generate a new tank.
